[Name] sighed as the final bell rung, signaling the end of her second week back to high-school, the second week of her senior year. The sounds of metal chairs scraping across the linoleum floor greeted her ears as her fellow students stood up from their seats to being chattering away with one another incessantly. Grabbing her textbooks, [Name] stuffed them back into her backpack before standing, slinging one of the bags straps over her shoulder as she headed towards the door of the classroom.

Most of her peers ignored her most of the time and ever since her return from summer camp even more had begun to ignore her. Somehow, most of the senior class knew what had happened over the summer at camp. They called her names for it; slut, whore. Rumors had spread like wildfire that she was pregnant with a twenty one year olds baby or that she’d only slept with him once and even that she was probably sleeping with the teachers in the school now, which was the reason why she got close to perfect grades.

[Name] had gotten used to the stares and the whispers that followed her throughout the hallways her first day back. She simply ignored them, heading down the polished white linoleum hallway to her dull beige locker. As expected, there were more notes taped to her locker and more cruel words written on it with Sharpie.

Averting her eyes to her combination lock, [Name] quickly deposited her bag and textbooks in her locker before shutting it and hurrying towards the doors of the school. At least she had the prospect of her job to look forward to after school. She’d gotten a job at the local ice-cream parlor when she’d returned from camp. And although she loved working there, more and more students from her school were finding that out and were showing up to plague her there as well.

Pushing open the heavy glass door, [Name] was finally able to escape the stifling building that felt more like hell than school and descend the concrete steps into the parking lot. Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out her iPod, putting her ear buds in and drowning out the sounds around her. The ice-cream parlor wasn’t far from her school and she reached it in a little over ten minutes.

The sound of a bell chiming signaled her arrival to work and her co-worker greeted her with a smile that [Name] just couldn’t return today. The insults had gotten to her today more than any other day before; maybe because today would have been three months for her, three months that she had thought they would reach but never did.

Making her way behind the counter, [Name] grabbed her apron and hat, putting them both on before clocking in and going to the register.

“Are you feeling alright [Name]?” her co-worker asked and [Name] blinked, turning to look at the younger teen boy before nodding. “I’m fine. Just a bit distracted is all,” she stated, turning to greet the first customer of her shift.

[Name] hated her customers, was insanely jealous of them. How were they able to walk around so happy while she was so depressed and down on herself? She worked like a robot for the first few hours of her shift, asking each customer the same question and fixing their orders before taking their money and giving them their change. It was so repetitive but she was used to it; work was her only escape and it wasn’t much of a refuge anymore. A group of teens came in and she knew that the whispers that were coming from their direction were about her.

Ignoring them, [Name] decided to take her break, handing her duties over to her co-worker and stepping out front to get some fresh air. Sighing, she pulled her hat off and ran a hand through her [color] hair, her [color] eyes seemingly dull and almost lifeless. She’d looked this way for weeks, ever since she’d felt her life crashing down on her. Moving to one of the picnic tables that sat outside, she curled her arms up and rested her head on them after sitting down. Work used to be her escape, used to be where she could go and not think about this past summer or worry about the names her peers called her, but it wasn’t so anymore. It seemed that everywhere she went, except for her own room, was a warzone. And even at home, things weren’t the same; her mother had found out about what had happened and started blaming herself for the ‘horrible daughter’ that she had raised.

[Name] was brought out of her reverie when she heard someone approaching her. Looking up, she blinked when she saw an attractive red head heading her way, looking right at her. “Uh, excuse me, but do you work here?” he asked her curiously.

She nodded, standing up and grabbing her hat. “I do. Is there no one inside?” she asked. Her co-worker never just abandoned the register so she wondered what was going on. The red head shook his head, sending the ends of his hair over his shoulder from the ponytail that was on the back of his head. “There’s no one at the register and my friend and I would really love some ice-cream,” he stated.

[Name] nodded. “Of course,” she stated, putting her hat back on before heading towards the door, opening it and stepping inside. There was a taller man standing in front of the counter, looking up at the menu trying to decide which flavor he liked. The red head stepped in behind her and let the door close behind him.

“Hey Shuhei man, I found a worker,” he stated. [Name] blinked, looking at the man over her shoulder. ‘Shuhei?’ she wondered to herself, turning back to look at the man who’d been looking at the menu. He’d turned around to face them by that time and [Name] froze. Those same dark grey eyes looked down at her from the same face that she remembered, the black hair that she used to love running her finger through still how she remembered it. She felt stupid now for not realizing it sooner.

“Thanks Renji,” Shuhei stated, continuing to stare down at [Name]. His friend, Renji, looked between them curiously, seeming to wonder what was going on silently between the two. [Name] stared back at Renji, wondering if she would look stupid by reaching up and pinching herself on the arm. Of course this was a dream; Shuhei had moved back across the country, he couldn’t be here now, standing in front of her as if nothing had ever happened, as if he’d never left her standing by the lake alone that night.

“[Name], are you ok?” Shuhei asked, concern for her marring his brow and making him scowl as he took a step towards her, his eyes moving over her body. She looked so different to him; she didn’t look as healthy anymore, as happy. She was still his [Name] but she was still just so different.

Shaking her head, she looked up at Shuhei as he stepped closer to her. “This isn’t real,” she said softly, taking a step back from him and causing Shuhei to look at her sadly. “It is real, [Name]. I’m really here,” he said softly, knowing that it was his fault that this girl, his girl, looked so crushed right now.

“Why are you here? You said that…” [Name] trailed off as Shuhei took another step towards her, his movements capturing her [color] gaze.

“I know what I said [Name]. But I couldn’t stay away from you. I had to come find you, to tell you I’m sorry and that I wanted you back. I was stupid for telling you what I did, but I didn’t want to hurt you,” he said softly, holding out an arm to coax her closer to him. [Name] looked at his hand before moving towards him, stepping into his arms and wrapping hers around his waist.

It was just like when he’d told her bye; he held her close and let her cry on him. Only this time, he was whispering soothing words to her, rubbing her back and telling her that he would never again leave her. After a few minutes of crying, [Name] pulled away and looked up at him as Shuhei leaned down, capturing her lips with his once more. She kissed him back softly and smiled softly when he pulled away. Shuhei smiled in return, resting his forehead against hers.

“So you’re the girl he wouldn’t shut up about,” Renji stated, breaking their moment together and earning both of their stares. Shuhei blushed lightly, rubbing the back of his neck. “Eh, that’s Renji, my best friend from back home. He agreed to move here with me so I could see you again,” he told [Name], looking down at her. [Name] smiled softly, looking over at Renji as Shuhei wrapped an arm around her. “Thank you Renji.”

Renji grinned and shrugged. “What are friends for? Now about that ice-cream.”

“It’s on the house,” she stated with a smile, letting Shuhei kiss her one last time before she moved back behind the counter to fix whatever they wanted. [Name] not only had Renji to thank but apparently her co-worker had been in on it the whole time, sitting in the corner and watching the whole interaction. [Name] happily bought him some ice-cream as well and sat with the three as they enjoyed their treat. Now [Name] could be happy again, could truly ignore the words people called her, the things that people said to and about her. Because now, Shuhei was here and she would prove them wrong; she could be happy now because her world had returned her.
